In the Jewish custom as we all know the menorah is the illuminating the Hanukkah lamp after the sunset it can be lit op by the oil or constant by the candle as per the wish of or likings of the devotee. According to the Hanukkah tradition these lamps are to be lit up at the sunset and are required to be placed doorway to spread light.
If your house is above the ground level that first floor or second floor then the lamp has to be placed on the window facing the entrance street of your house. In the Torah the significance of lighting up of lamp is to spread light, peace and harmony in the world.
There are to mitzvah of lighting the lamps and there is one with the lighting of the lamp. There are number of teaching that say that light is the way to spread love and affection in the world and this light comes from the Jerusalem holy temple, during the eight days Hanukkah festival the lights are to be lit up and one should not forget to do that.
Basically the lamps Hanukkah were originated from lighting the menorah.
