However, when the hair loss goes beyond the normal limits, the thinning is noticeable. Alopecia areata: Causes rapid hair loss and affects men and women. Generally caused due to immunity disorder where the body’s own white blood cells attack the hair follicles. Alopecia Totalis is another condition where there is total loss of hair on the scalp. A rare condition sometimes occurs called Alopecia Universalis which involves complete loss of hair from the body.

Genetic reasons: Called male pattern baldness, this can affect about 25% of men by the time they are 30. Not just genetic, the male hormone testosterone could also play a role. Unhealthy hair is produced or hair production is stopped by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) generated by the conversion of testosterone. Men without testosterone would never have male pattern baldness.
Skin diseases: this could also be responsible for hair loss and it can affect the scalp. Some of the skin diseases include dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungus such as ringworm and tinea captis.
Sudden illness or fever: you can see large chunks of hair falling off after any serious illness or fever. This is however a temporary event.
The other common factors which can also result in hair loss include childbirth, menopause, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and getting old. Apart from these reasons, there are several others too.
With the right hair loss treatment, you can stop hair loss as well as promote re-growth. Some ways you could treat hair loss naturally are:
1. Vitamins A, B, C and E are hair promoters. Include them in the diet. What are the roles of these vitamins? They provide sebum, promote blood circulation to the scalp by enhancement of oxygen absorption and collagen.
2. Care for the scalp: It would help a lot if you regularly massage your scalp using herbal oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. Some natural therapy like essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood, are known for their efficacy in the treatment of alopecia areata.
3. Avoiding scalp abuse: Chemical shampoos and blow drying must be avoided. You can severely damage hair and scalp by coloring as well as straightening. You hair is stripped of natural oils and turns brittle if you wash it daily with hot water.
4. Going the herbalk way: Try using powders of amla, shikakai, henna and ritha as shampoo and conditioner.
